Capital: Kathmandu
Primary language: Nepali
Other languages: Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Tamang, Newar, Magar, Gurung, Sherpa, and many others
Major religious traditions: Hinduism and Buddhism

Nepal is a culturally and religiously diverse nation nestled in the Himalayas, between India and China. Hinduism is the predominant religion, while Buddhism has deep historical and cultural roots. The country is also home to Muslims, Christians, followers of traditional beliefs, and communities whose spiritual practices combine different religious and cultural influences.

Christianity has grown in Nepal over recent decades, and local churches play an important role in the lives of many believers. Nevertheless, sharing the Gospel continues to present significant challenges. Religious identity is often closely connected to family heritage, caste, community belonging, and long-established traditions. For some Nepalese people, becoming a Christian can be perceived as rejecting their family’s beliefs and cultural identity.

Nepal’s Constitution recognizes freedom of religion but prohibits converting another person from one religion to another and engaging in acts that undermine or jeopardize another person’s religion. These constitutional provisions, together with criminal laws against religious conversion and certain forms of religious activity, create a challenging environment for Christian evangelism. The result is a complex landscape in which churches seek to share their faith while navigating legal uncertainty, social opposition, and the needs of new Christian Believers.

Nepal stretches from the lowland Terai plains to the highest mountains on earth. The country is home to an extraordinary range of peoples and languages, from communities living along the Indian border to Himalayan peoples whose villages sit at great elevations. Kathmandu is the country’s political and cultural center, but Nepal’s story cannot be understood from the capital alone.

There are villages that can only be reached after hours or days of travel. There are mountain communities separated by geography. There are cities filled with students and migrant workers. There are families living in the Terai whose cultural world is very different from that of the high Himalayas.

Nepal contains a remarkable mosaic of peoples. The Brahmin and Chhetri communities form large parts of the population. The Newar people have a particularly important historical and cultural connection with the Kathmandu Valley. The Tamang, Gurung, Magar, Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Tharu, Dalit, and many other communities each have their own histories, languages, and traditions.

In the south, the Madhesi communities maintain strong cultural and linguistic connections with northern India. In the mountains are communities whose lives have been shaped by altitude, migration, trade, and generations of Himalayan traditions. Nepal’s diversity means that there is no single cultural pathway by which the Gospel will reach everyone.

Pray for Christ to be made known within each community, language, and generation.

Legal restrictions on religious conversion

One of the most significant obstacles to evangelism in Nepal is the legal framework governing religious conversion. The Constitution prohibits acts intended to convert another person, while criminal law provides penalties for prohibited conversion-related activities. These provisions can create uncertainty for Christians who wish to explain their beliefs, distribute Christian literature, or engage in evangelistic outreach.
Christian organizations and religious freedom advocates have raised concerns that broadly interpreted conversion laws may restrict peaceful religious expression and the ability of individuals to explore or embrace a faith of their own choice. Churches must therefore exercise care in their outreach, teaching, and public activities.
The challenge is to ensure that people can freely explore the Christian faith and make informed religious decisions without coercion, intimidation, or unjustified legal consequences.

Strong Hindu and Buddhist cultural traditions

Religion in Nepal is deeply intertwined with family life, festivals, community customs, and cultural identity. Hindu traditions shape much of the nation’s public and private life, while Buddhist traditions are particularly significant among several ethnic and regional communities.
For people considering Christianity, conversion may be interpreted by relatives as a rejection of ancestral traditions or an abandonment of their community. Families may worry about the loss of cultural continuity, social relationships, or participation in traditional ceremonies.
Evangelism therefore requires cultural sensitivity, humility, and patience. Christians must communicate the message of Jesus in ways that respect the dignity of Nepalese people and distinguish the Gospel from any suggestion that a person must despise their heritage to follow Christ.

Family rejection and social pressure

Some Nepalese Christians, particularly those who come from Hindu backgrounds, experience resistance when they embrace Christianity. This can include family disagreements, exclusion from religious ceremonies, pressure to return to their former faith, or strained relationships within their communities. The severity of these experiences varies considerably by family, location, and social circumstances.
In close-knit villages, where family and community networks are important sources of support, religious conversion can have consequences beyond the individual. New believers may find themselves isolated or uncertain about where they can receive spiritual encouragement.
The challenge for the Church is not only to introduce people to Christ but also to provide compassionate pastoral care, meaningful fellowship, and discipleship for those navigating difficult family relationships.

Caste discrimination and social divisions

Although Nepal has legal protections against caste-based discrimination, caste hierarchies and social exclusion continue to affect some communities. People from historically marginalized castes may face barriers to education, employment, social participation, and equal treatment.
Christian congregations can offer a community in which people from different social backgrounds worship together as equals in Christ. However, the presence of caste prejudice within wider society—and sometimes within Christian communities themselves—can complicate this witness.
Evangelism must be accompanied by a genuine commitment to dignity, justice, and equality. Churches are called to demonstrate through their relationships that every person is valuable before God, regardless of caste, ethnicity, economic circumstances, or social standing.

Limited access to Christian resources and biblical teaching

Access to Scripture, Christian literature, and systematic biblical teaching is essential for both evangelism and discipleship. Nepal is linguistically diverse, with Nepali serving as the national language alongside numerous regional and indigenous languages. Communicating the Gospel effectively requires resources that people can understand in their own languages and cultural contexts.
Legal restrictions on proselytism and religious conversion can complicate the distribution of Christian literature and the organization of evangelistic teaching. Churches also need trained leaders who can explain Scripture clearly, respond to questions, and help new believers grow in their faith.
The challenge is not merely to introduce people to Christianity, but to ensure that those who choose to follow Christ have opportunities to understand the Bible, develop a mature faith, and become active members of a local Christian community.

Reaching remote mountain and rural communities

Nepal’s mountainous geography presents practical challenges for evangelism. Many villages are separated by difficult terrain, long walking routes, limited road access, and seasonal weather conditions. Travel can be expensive and time-consuming, making regular visits by Christian workers difficult.
Remote communities may also have limited access to educational resources, healthcare, and other essential services. Where churches are small or geographically isolated, believers may struggle to receive regular pastoral support and discipleship.
The challenge is to strengthen local Christian leaders and equip believers to serve their own communities. Sustainable, locally led ministry can help ensure that Christian fellowship and biblical teaching continue even when outside workers cannot visit regularly.

Misunderstanding and negative perceptions of Christianity

Christianity is sometimes portrayed by critics as a foreign religion that threatens Nepalese culture or seeks to undermine established religious traditions. Allegations of forced or financially induced conversions have also contributed to public debate about Christian activity. Such allegations must be assessed carefully rather than assumed to be true of Christian communities generally.
These perceptions can create suspicion toward churches, missionaries, and Christian social-service organizations. They may also discourage people from exploring the Christian faith for fear of being judged by their families or communities.
Christian witness must therefore be characterized by integrity, transparency, and genuine love for others. Humanitarian assistance should never be conditional on religious participation or conversion. Churches can demonstrate the compassion of Christ by serving people regardless of their religious background and respecting each person’s freedom of conscience.

Registration and organizational challenges

Christian organizations may encounter administrative difficulties when registering religiously affiliated institutions, owning property, or conducting certain activities. Religious organizations other than Buddhist monasteries generally had to register as nongovernmental or nonprofit organizations to own property or operate legally. Christian organizations have also reported concerns about restrictions affecting religious institutions.
These requirements can affect the establishment of churches, the operation of Christian institutions, and the work of organizations involved in education, publishing, and community development.
The challenge is to build accountable, transparent organizations that comply with applicable laws while continuing to serve local communities and support believers. Prayer is needed for wisdom for church leaders and for a legal environment in which religious minorities can organize and worship without discrimination.

Pray For The Many Languages Of Nepal

Exodus 22:21

Heavenly Father,

We lift up the nation of Nepal into Your loving and sovereign hands. We pray for the people of this beautiful Himalayan nation, that their hearts may be open to Your truth and that they may encounter the saving grace and unconditional love of Jesus Christ. Lord, we ask You to strengthen the Christian community in Nepal, especially those who face rejection, discrimination, or pressure from their families and communities because of their faith.

Grant them courage, wisdom, and perseverance, and surround them with loving fellow believers who will encourage them in their walk with You. We pray for pastors, church leaders, missionaries, and Christian workers who faithfully serve the people of Nepal. Equip them with spiritual discernment, sound biblical teaching, and the resources they need to nurture new believers and establish strong, Christ-centered communities.

Father, we pray for the nation’s leaders and authorities, that they will uphold freedom of conscience and protect every person’s right to practice their faith peacefully. May legal restrictions that hinder peaceful religious expression be addressed with justice and wisdom. We pray for people from every caste, ethnic group, and social background, that prejudice, discrimination, and division will give way to dignity, equality, and genuine love for one another.

Lord, open doors for the Gospel to reach remote mountain villages, rural communities, and people who have had little opportunity to hear the message of Jesus. Provide Scripture and biblical teaching in the languages people understand, and raise up faithful Nepalese Christian Believers who will share Your Word with humility, compassion, and integrity. We pray for those who are searching for hope, meaning, forgiveness, and peace; may they find opportunities to explore the Christian faith freely and make decisions according to their conscience.

Protect new Christian Believers, strengthen their families, and provide them with fellowship, discipleship, and spiritual maturity. May the churches of Nepal be known for their unity, holiness, compassion, and service to all people, regardless of their religious background. Holy Spirit, move throughout Nepal, bringing healing to broken relationships, hope to discouraged hearts, wisdom to leaders, and strength to Your people. May the light of Christ shine from the Himalayan mountains to the valleys and cities, and may many come to know Your love through the faithful witness of Your Church.

In the mighty and precious Name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
