Pray for Ethiopia to become a sending nation

Pray for Ethiopian Christian Believers willing to cross cultural, linguistic, and religious boundaries to reach the unreached in their own nation, and for Ethiopia’s strong Church to become a great sending force across the Horn of Africa and beyond.

Lord of the harvest, raise up workers from within Ethiopia and send them to the ends of the earth.

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’

Isaiah 6:8

Pray for the Church to heal and unite

Pray for Ethiopia’s churches, ancient and new, to grow in holiness, unity, and love, to heal from division, and to keep their eyes on the places where Jesus Christ is not well known.

Father, heal what is broken in Your Church in Ethiopia, and make Your people one.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!

Psalm 133:1

Pray for the next generation

Ethiopia has a vast and youthful population. Pray that young Ethiopian Christian Believers would take the Gospel to the unreached as their generation’s mission, and that God would raise up a new wave of church planters, translators, and intercessors.

Lord, awaken a generation that will carry the Gospel farther than any before them.

One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts.

Psalm 145:4

Pray for peace

Pray for an end to the conflicts that have brought suffering to many Ethiopian communities, for comfort for the displaced, for peace between Ethiopia and its neighbors, and for protection for the vulnerable.

Father, bring peace to lands torn by conflict, and strengthen and protect Your people.

The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.

Ethiopia is the giant of the Horn of Africa: a nation of ancient faith, dramatic highlands, and more than a hundred distinct peoples. It carries one of the oldest Christian traditions on earth and a large, growing community of Christian Believers. Yet within its borders live tens of millions who have never heard the Gospel.

Ethiopia is one of the most linguistically rich nations on earth, with more than eighty languages spoken across its regions. Amharic is widely used as a working language, but most people treasure their own mother tongue.

Highland peoples

The Amhara, Oromo, Tigrayan, and many other peoples, among whom the historic Orthodox Church and a vibrant evangelical movement have deep roots.

Somali

More than 8 million in Ethiopia, classified as frontier, with very few followers of Jesus Christ.

Afar

More than 2 million, living in the hot lowlands of the northeast.

Peoples of the lowlands and borderlands

Many smaller communities in the east, south, and lowland border regions, most of them Muslim and almost untouched by the Gospel.

Ethiopia is passing through a season of deep instability. Insurgencies continue in the Amhara and Oromia regions, and conflict has reignited in Tigray. In September 2026, seven armed groups announced a coalition against the government, and the United Nations has voiced deep concern over the worsening security situation. The historic Church has also been strained by the 2023 breakaway synod within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Of Ethiopia’s 120 people groups, 30 are unreached and 6 are frontier, communities with almost no followers of Jesus Christ and no known movement toward Him. Around 24 million people live in these unreached groups.

Ethiopia is both a mission field and a sending nation. Alongside its historic Church and vibrant evangelical movement, whole peoples remain almost untouched by the Gospel, mostly Muslim communities in the east, south, and lowland borderlands.

For many of these communities, faith and identity are one, and there are very few followers of Jesus Christ within their own families and clans.

Language matters deeply. Scripture in Amharic may not reach a Somali or Afar speaker who knows only their mother tongue, and some of Ethiopia’s people groups still lack complete Scripture in their own language.

Conflict and displacement have made many regions harder to reach, and have stretched the churches that might otherwise send workers to them.

Pray for the Somali, Afar, and lowland peoples

Pray for the Somali, Afar, and other peoples of Ethiopia among whom there are very few followers of Jesus Christ, that God would prepare hearts, open doors, and raise up witnesses within each community.

Father, You know every people group by name. Draw the Somali, the Afar, and every lowland people to worship You.

All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Lord, And shall glorify Your name.

Psalm 86:9

Pray for Scripture in every language

Pray for Scripture and audio resources in every Ethiopian language that still lacks them, and for translators and local Christian Believers who can carry God’s Word to people who have never heard it in their heart language.

Lord, let Your Word, which stands forever, be heard in every language of Ethiopia.

The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 40:8

Pray for movements of God

Ethiopia’s need is far greater than human strength alone can meet. Pray for movements of God among the unreached peoples of the lowlands and the east, and for whole communities to encounter Jesus Christ personally.

Father, do by Your Spirit what no human effort can do.

‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.

Zechariah 4:6

Lord Father,

We pray for Ethiopia, a nation of ancient faith and countless peoples, blessed with a great Church and burdened with a great task. You know every people group by name. You know every highland town, every lowland village, every family, and every person who has never heard the Gospel.

Raise up workers from within Ethiopia and send them to the ends of the earth. Give Your Church courage to cross every boundary that keeps people from the message of Jesus Christ. Provide Scripture in every language. Bring peace to lands torn by conflict, comfort the displaced, and heal what is broken in Your Church. Move among Ethiopia’s young people, and awaken a generation that will carry the Gospel farther than any before them.

For those who have never heard, send someone. Let the name of Jesus Christ be heard in every community, let churches be planted where there are none, and let Ethiopia become a testimony of Your love and grace among the nations.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
