Executions in North Korea increased sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report by the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG). Between 2020 and 2024, at least 153 people were executed or given death sentences, much higher than in the years before the pandemic. Many of the punished people were accused of watching or sharing foreign media like K-dramas and K-pop, or for religious beliefs and “superstitions.” The government considers these actions a threat to its control and ideology. Other serious accusations included drug trafficking, murder, and trying to escape the country. Most executions were carried out publicly, creating fear among citizens. Human rights researchers say the increase in punishments reflects tighter control under the government during border closures. The report also shows that executions have been used as a way to maintain political power and limit outside influence. These findings raise serious concerns about current human rights and freedom in North Korea.
Pray for divine protection upon those persecuted for their beliefs and actions in North Korea. Pray for justice and peace for the oppressed in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 141:8).
Pray for the end of the executions and human rights abuses in North Korea. Pray for the authorities to embrace freedom, justice, and peace for all the people living in the country (The Holy Bible, Exodus 23:2).
Pray for the international community’s advocacy to abolish the practice of execution in North Korea. Pray for the individuals on death row, especially those imprisoned for non-violent offenses, to have hope and a future (The Holy Bible, Job 5:16).
