Pray for Christian leaders and workers

Ask God to give pastors, teachers, missionaries, and local Christian Believers wisdom and endurance as they serve under difficult circumstances.

not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:25

Pray for displaced families

Pray for the hundreds of thousands of Malians who have been displaced within the country or forced to seek refuge elsewhere.

The Lord watches over the strangers;
He relieves the fatherless and widow;
But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.

Psalm 146:9

Pray for children and education

Pray for children whose education has been interrupted by insecurity and displacement, and for teachers working under difficult circumstances.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

Hosea 4:6

Pray for peace and restoration

Ask God to bring peace to communities affected by violence, displacement, and fear, and to restore what has been damaged.

He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.

Mali is a vast West African nation stretching from the southern savanna toward the Sahara.

Its people represent extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity. Bambara, Fulani, Songhai, Soninke, Dogon, Tuareg, Senoufo, Malinke, Bozo, Khasonke, and many other peoples live within the country.

French is the official language, while numerous African languages are used in homes, markets, and communities.

Islam is the dominant religion, while Christian communities and Indigenous religious traditions are also present. For many families, religious identity is intertwined with culture, ancestry, and community. Among Mali’s largest peoples are the Bambara, numbering more than 7.8 million within the country according to current people-group estimates. The Songhai-Koyraboro number approximately 1.35 million, while the Khasonke number is more than 1.1 million.

Further north, across the desert regions, are Tuareg communities, including approximately 657,000 Tamasheq Tuareg in Mali.

Mali is experiencing a prolonged humanitarian crisis driven by insecurity, communal conflict, climate pressures, and economic vulnerability.

UNHCR reports that approximately 400,000 Malians remain internally displaced, while more than 334,000 Malians are refugees in other countries. Mali is also hosting large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers. The consequences reach deeply into ordinary life. Families have been separated. Communities have been uprooted. Children have lost access to education. Livelihoods have been disrupted. Healthcare and other basic services can be difficult to access.

UNHCR reports that insecurity has contributed to widespread displacement and that humanitarian needs remain substantial. Recent UNHCR reporting also indicates that the wider Central Sahel crisis has continued to drive displacement through 2026. For the Church, this creates a calling to both pray and serve.

Pray for the displaced. Pray for those who remain in vulnerable communities. Pray for humanitarian workers. Pray for churches caring for families under enormous pressure.

There are 72 people groups in Mali, with 43 classified as unreached.

23.57 million people live within those unreached communities, representing about 91.5% of the country’s population. Twenty of the country’s people groups are classified as unreached frontier peoples.

Some of the largest unreached communities include:

  • Bambara
  • Songhai-Koyraboro
  • Tamasheq Tuareg
  • Mamara Senoufo
  • Western Maninka
  • Wassulu
  • Saharan Arab communities
  • Numerous smaller Mande, Dogon, Senoufo, and Sahelian peoples

The Mamara Senoufo, for example, number approximately 1.79 million in Mali and remain overwhelmingly Muslim.

The Wassulu, numbering approximately 252,000 in Mali, are also overwhelmingly Muslim and have an extremely small evangelical presence.

The Songhai-Koyraboro, numbering approximately 1.35 million, are almost entirely Muslim according to current estimates.

Mali’s Christian witness exists within a complex environment.

The country’s legal framework provides for freedom of religion and prohibits religious discrimination. At the same time, insecurity in large parts of the country has made ordinary community life and Christian ministry increasingly difficult.

For many unreached communities, the barriers are not simply legal.

They include:

  • Distance
  • Language
  • Geographic isolation
  • Islamic Extremist Groups targeting Christians
  • Strong family and community traditions
  • Limited Christian presence
  • Poverty and lack of infrastructure
  • Insecurity

In some communities, following Jesus can also carry significant social consequences. Faith is often closely connected to family and community identity. A person who chooses a different religious path may face misunderstanding, rejection, or pressure from people closest to them.

Pray for the Tuareg peoples

Pray for the Tamasheq-speaking communities of the Sahara and Sahel. Ask God to make the Gospel accessible in their own languages and cultural context.

All nations whom You have made
Shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And shall glorify Your name.

Psalm 86:9

Pray for the Fulani communities

Pray for Fulani families throughout Mali and for opportunities for Christian witness among communities where Islam is deeply established.

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.

Psalm 14:2

Pray for the smaller people groups

Ask God to reach communities that are easily overlooked because their populations are small or geographically dispersed.

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13

Heavenly Father,

We bring Mali before You.

You know every people. Every language. Every village. Every desert community. Every river community. Every family. Every child.

You know those who follow Jesus. You know those who are searching. You know those who have never heard. Reach the Bambara. Reach the Fulani. Reach the Tuareg. Reach the Songhai. Reach the Senoufo. Reach the Dogon. Reach the Maninka. Reach the Bozo. Reach every smaller community whose name may be unfamiliar to us, but is completely known to You.

Strengthen Your Church. Give wisdom to Christian leaders. Give courage to Christian Believers. Protect those serving vulnerable communities. Bring comfort to displaced families. Protect children. Restore education. Provide food, shelter, and opportunity.

Bring peace to communities experiencing violence. Open doors for Scripture. Raise up faithful witnesses from within Mali’s own communities and let the Gospel cross every barrier that prevents people from knowing Christ.

May those who have never heard hear. May those who hear understand. May those who understand believe and may those who believe become witnesses to their own people.

In the Name of Jesus,
Amen.
