Human Rights Watch is warning countries not to rush into restoring diplomatic ties with Eritrea without clear steps toward justice and accountability. Reports say the United States is considering easing sanctions that were imposed over serious human rights abuses linked to Eritrean forces during the war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. However, rights groups argue that lifting these sanctions too soon could send a message that such abuses have no consequences. Eritrea has long been criticized for strict rule under President Isaias Afwerki, including indefinite national service that many describe as forced labor, as well as the detention of journalists, religious leaders, and political critics without trial for long years. During the Tigray conflict, Eritrean troops were also accused of committing violence against civilians, including killings and sexual abuse. Critics say any new engagement with Eritrea should depend on real reforms and respect for human rights.
Pray for the international authorities to take immediate action to bring justice to the victims of the war crimes in the Tigray region. Pray that the perpetrators of the war crimes are brought to justice immediately (The Holy Bible, Psalm 55:23).
Pray for the LORD’s love and comfort to fill the hearts and minds of the victims of the war crimes in the Tigray region. Pray for the LORD’s healing power upon them to heal them physically, psychologically, and spiritually (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 41:10-13).
Pray for an end to the oppressive regime in Eritrea. Pray for the international authorities to urge the Eritrean regime to uphold the rights and freedoms of its citizens (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:4).
