Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan faced significant economic hardship and turned to foreign partners for support, particularly China. Over time, China became one of its biggest lenders and investors, funding roads, factories, and energy projects. While these projects contributed to Tajikistan’s development, they also increased the country’s debt, which has now grown to over $1 billion. Many loans are “tied loans,” meaning Tajikistan must use Chinese companies, materials, and workers, which keeps money flowing back to China. Some analysts warn that this creates a “debt trap,” where a country struggles to repay loans and may lose control over land or resources. For example, parts of the disputed territory were once transferred to China through agreements, and Chinese firms now operate in the mining and agricultural sectors. Supporters argue that China is a reliable partner, but critics contend that the growing debt reduces Tajikistan’s economic independence. With trade heavily in China’s favor and exports staying low, concerns remain that dependency could deepen in the future.
Pray for the LORD to expose the hidden motives behind financial agreements that would burden Tajikistan with a debt trap. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and courage for all authorities to make the right decisions as they pursue infrastructure partnerships (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 22:3).
Pray for just and sustainable development in Tajikistan. Pray for the success of the efforts of the authorities to improve the lives and livelihoods of the civilians in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 72:12).
