Authorities in South Sudan have recently arrested several current and former officials linked to the country’s oil and financial sectors. The arrests began on February 24 and included former finance ministers, senior banking officials, and other government figures. Among those detained are Bak Barnaba Chol and Marial Dongrin Ater, as well as former Bank of South Sudan governor Moses Makur Deng Manguak. Many of the detainees are being held at the National Security Services headquarters in the capital city, Juba, which human rights groups say has a reputation for detainee abuse. The government says the arrests are part of an investigation into financial malpractice and corruption. However, some observers question whether the process is transparent and fair. Corruption has long been a significant problem in South Sudan, particularly in the management of oil revenues and public funds. Experts say corruption has weakened public services, such as healthcare and education. Rights groups argue that anti-corruption efforts must follow the law and respect human rights.
Pray for the authorities to take immediate action to recover the misappropriated funds and punish the perpetrators responsible. Pray for improved management of public assets in South Sudan (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 22:23).
Pray for reforms and breakthroughs in the South Sudanese Governance. Pray for the truth, transparency, and justice to uproot corruption at every level of government in the country (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:19).
