Press freedom in Türkiye deteriorated in 2025, with journalists facing harassment, censorship, physical attacks, and economic pressure. A report by eight international press freedom groups said the country is “extremely hostile to independent journalism.” Critical reporting is often treated as a crime or security threat, creating fear among media workers. The crackdown increased after protests over the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, a leading political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Many journalists, including Fatih Altaylı, Furkan Karabay, Tolga Şardan, and Merdan Yanardağ, were prosecuted under vague terrorism or disinformation laws. Physical attacks also rose, including the murder of Hakan Tosun and assaults on others. Authorities employed fines, broadcasting bans, account blockings, and trustee appointments to regulate the media. Digital platform changes reduced independent news reach by up to 90%, causing outlets like Gazete Duvar to close. Exiled journalists faced financial and security challenges. Groups urged Türkiye to protect journalism, repeal restrictive laws, and support media sustainability. Türkiye ranked 159th of 180 countries in press freedom in 2025.
Pray for the protection of journalists, who risk their lives to bring truth to the world, even amidst harsh repression. Pray for more press freedom in Türkiye (The Holy Bible, Job 36:15).
Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of the imprisoned journalists and activists in Türkiye. Pray for the end of the repression of the press in the country. Pray for the civilians as well as Journalists to freely exercise their rights and freedom (The Holy Bible, Psalm 140:1).
