Türkiye’s parliament erupted in a brawl on 11th February’2026 after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appointed Akın Gürlek as Justice Minister in a Cabinet reshuffle. Opposition lawmakers tried to block Gürlek, a former Istanbul chief prosecutor, from taking the oath of office because he led trials against members of the main opposition, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), which they say were politically motivated. Fights broke out in parliament, with pushing and punches, forcing the speaker to pause the session for 15 minutes. Gürlek later took the oath with the ruling party’s support. Erdoğan also appointed Mustafa Çiftçi as interior minister. The reshuffle comes amid arrests of CHP officials, including Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who faces charges of corruption and organized crime, with a possible prison sentence of over 2,000 years. Supporters say the charges are political. The government says the judiciary is independent. The changes occur as Türkiye debates constitutional reforms and a peace initiative with the PKK to end long-term conflict. Parliament is expected to approve reforms to help the process.
