The latest poverty figures reveal a bitter reality for Israel. Currently, there are close to two million people living below the poverty line. The poverty level is on the rise because of the war and the increasing cost of living. On one side of the conflict, Israelis need to be united while facing these conditions. However, when many citizens are in need, the level of social unity is at a dangerous level. In the aftermath of October 7, Israelis were very united and helped the displaced population, soldiers, and the elderly. The latest poverty figures suggest that Israel’s welfare system is not able to provide sufficient help for the poor. Experts have indicated that poverty reduction measures would cost the country a fraction of what it spent on the recent war. The real problem is not whether Israel can afford it; the problem lies with the will to fight poverty, a necessary component for Israel’s future and societal values.
LORD, we pray for the people in Israel, especially those struggling with both financial hardship and poor living conditions. Father, help them to break free from the cycle of debt and economic insecurity. LORD, provide them with opportunities to improve their lives and livelihoods (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:6).
Pray for divine wisdom for the authorities to implement effective policies that lead to lasting change in the lives of the people suffering financial insecurity in Israel. Pray for increased support by Israel’s welfare system for the vulnerable in the country (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 3:5-6).
