China’s presence in Laos has grown rapidly in recent years, with large investments, Chinese tourists, and new infrastructure projects changing life in the country. One of the biggest projects is the China‑Laos high‑speed railway linking Yunnan in China to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. This railway has brought more tourists and boosted some businesses, but many locals question whether it is worth the cost. Chinese funding has also supported developments in towns like Boten, and learning Mandarin is becoming more common as young people seek jobs with Chinese companies. At the same time, Laos is facing a growing debt crisis. Much of the country’s debt is owed to China, and experts warn that repayment obligations could limit future spending on health, education, and local development. Many Laotians worry that ordinary citizens are not benefiting from these projects, while loans and rising debt give China greater influence over the country. The long-term effects on Laos’ economy, culture, and independence remain uncertain.
Pray for the LORD to expose and uproot systems of exploitation in Laos, both foreign and domestic. Pray for the LORD to protect the nation from every form of oppression in the name of partnership. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:11).
Pray for divine wisdom and discernment so that the authorities in Laos can effectively manage resources and tackle the country’s debts. Pray for the healing and restoration of the country’s economy, which has been broken by debt and mismanagement (The Holy Bible, Psalm 80:19).
