A nationwide study in Bangladesh reveals a serious substance abuse crisis, with early exposure among adolescents and high vulnerability among youth. About one-third of users began taking drugs between ages 8–17, while most others started between 18–25. Unemployment, peer pressure, mental stress, family instability, and easy drug availability (reported by nearly 90%) are major risk factors. The estimated number of substance users stands at over 8.19 million, with cannabis being the most commonly used drug, followed by yaba and alcohol. Injection drug use, though smaller in number, poses severe health risks including HIV and hepatitis. Access to treatment and rehabilitation is extremely limited—only 13% have ever received help—while stigma, lack of counselling, and employment support continue to hinder recovery.

Abba Father, we lift up the children and youth who are exposed to harmful substances. Guard their hearts and minds, and lead them away from destructive  paths. Lord, we pray for those struggling with addiction. Bring healing to their bodies, freedom to their minds, and hope to their lives. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).

Lord, grant wisdom to leaders, health workers, and organizations to provide effective treatment, counselling, and opportunities for a better future. Amen (The Holy Bible, Galatians 6:2).
