Türkiye has been facing increased concerns over drug trafficking incidents in Türkiye, considering that in most of these incidents, arrests have occurred without subsequent convictions. The Spanish authorities seized 9 tons of cocaine from the ‘United S’ ship, which has led to concerns involving Türkiye in this matter. Four members of the Türkish crew were arrested in this matter, and Türkish authorities raided 19 places in Türkiye to freeze assets being used or owned by these suspects and assets of a Türkiye-based shipping company. Türkiye’s past operations, like the Bataklık case in 2020, ended with all suspects acquitted because courts required clear proof linking assets to specific crimes. Criminal networks in Türkiye are reportedly cooperating with international groups, including Balkan and Latin American cartels. Ships often move cocaine from Türkiye through ports in Africa and South America to Europe. Owners sometimes claim vessels were sold before seizures to avoid responsibility. Experts say these cases show the challenges Türkiye faces in controlling international drug trafficking. The ongoing investigation of the ‘United S’ is a test of Türkiye’s ability to stop drug smuggling and prosecute traffickers.
