Niger’s military regime has enacted an ordinance called “general mobilization” and has enormous powers to ensure security. This ordinance was passed on “Dec. 26, 2025,” and the government can order the mobilization of citizens, seize their property, restrict communication, and order people to report against activities that demonstrate enmity to the state. This military regime’s ambition is to ensure the security of the country and its territory and to defend the sovereignty and security of the people of the nation. However, human rights organizations fear this legislation could serve to mute the voices of the people and increase repression with the coup, since the coup of July 2023, politicians, journalists, trade unions, and civil society organizations have been subjected to arrest and pressure. Niger faces violence from armed Islamist groups, mainly based in the Tillabery region. However, according to international law, emergency legislation should never exceed the situation that justifies it and should always be strictly justified.
Pray for the Nigerien lawmakers to uphold the international human rights laws and to reconsider the newly decreed “general mobilization” law. Pray for wise counsel for them to improve the security system by not altering the rights and freedoms of the civilians of Niger (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:19
Pray for freedom of speech, expression, and press freedom in Niger. Pray for the end of the oppression of civilians in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 72:4).
