Eritrea has one of the worst press freedom situations in the world. It kept the lowest position in the 2025 Global Press Freedom Index, showing that there is almost no independent media in the country. The government controls all news, censors information, and watches people’s communications closely. Independent journalism is banned and any reporter who speaks against the state can be arrested and held without trial. There are no private newspapers or TV channels, and the only media allowed are those run by the state, which only share government views. Because of this strict control, people in Eritrea have very limited access to facts or different opinions. These conditions mean that freedom of expression is almost completely denied and many journalists have been jailed or forced into exile. The United Nations continues to monitor the situation, as press freedom remains deeply restricted.
Pray for press freedom and freedom of expression in Eritrea. Pray for divine protection upon all the journalists to do their jobs without government oppression (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:19).
Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of all the imprisoned journalists and rights activists in Eritrea. Pray for the end of the oppressive regime in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 17:13).
