Thailand and Cambodia have started removing heavy weapons from their shared border and clearing landmines after both countries signed a new peace agreement. The deal follows deadly clashes in July that left several soldiers dead and caused fear among nearby villagers. It was the worst border fighting between the two neighbors in many years. The withdrawal will take place in three stages, first removing rockets, then artillery, and finally tanks and armored vehicles. Both sides hope to finish the process before the end of the year. Thai officials said the move shows a real effort to build trust and reduce tensions, but they will not reopen border crossings or release captured Cambodian soldiers until they are sure Cambodia is keeping its promises. Cambodia has said it wants lasting peace and better cooperation with Thailand, especially in trade and tourism, to benefit both countries’ border communities.
Pray for the success of the peace efforts of the authorities of Thailand and Cambodia. Pray for friendly and peaceful relations between the two countries. Pray for peace and justice to prevail in the border region (The Holy Bible, Psalm 122:7).
Pray for divine protection and provision for the people living on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Pray for peaceful cooperation between the two countries for the welfare of both countries’ border communities (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:14).
