A strong earthquake hit northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-e-Sharif around 20:30 GMT (01:00 local time). The quake had a magnitude of 6.3 and struck at a depth of 28 km, according to the US Geological Survey. The agency warned of possible heavy casualties and widespread damage. A Taliban spokesman said four people died and many others were injured in the Sholgara district. Many residents ran into the streets as buildings shook, and some people were hurt after falling from tall structures. Videos showed debris near the famous Blue Mosque, a historic and religious site in the city. Police teams in Kabul stated that they were closely monitoring the situation. This earthquake comes only a few months after another powerful quake in August that killed over 1,000 people in eastern Afghanistan. The country frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location on several active fault lines.
Father GOD, we ask for Your divine protection over all the lives affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan. LORD, comfort those who have lost their loved ones and heal those who are injured (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).
Almighty GOD, grant strength and wisdom for the rescue teams as they work tirelessly to save lives trapped under the rubble. We plead for Your divine protection and mercy upon the people still missing. Grant wisdom for the authorities to implement more precautionary measures to avoid such incidents in the future (The Holy Bible, Psalm 71:3).
