A Türkish court has dismissed a case that tried to remove the main opposition party’s leader, Ozgur Ozel, and cancel its 2023 congress. This decision gives relief to President Erdogan’s rivals after a long year of legal pressure. The court said the case had no substance because the party had re-elected Ozel in a special congress last month. The ruling boosted Türkiye’s stock market and strengthened the lira, which had fallen earlier when Istanbul’s mayor and Erdogan’s key political rival, Ekrem Imamoglu, was jailed. Ozel, 51, has become a prominent opposition figure, leading anti-government protests since Imamoglu’s arrest. If the court had removed him, it could have caused chaos in the opposition and helped Erdogan remain in power. The CHP party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi – Republican People’s Party), which denies all charges, is now tied with Erdogan’s AK Party in the polls. Hundreds of CHP members still face corruption charges, which they say are political. Erdogan’s government insists the judiciary is independent.

Pray for the end of political rivalry in Türkiye. Pray for unity among the political leaders to work towards the welfare of the people and the country (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).

Pray for the strong and independent judiciary system in Türkiye. Pray for the lawmakers to hold the corrupt authorities accountable. Pray for more stringent measures to eradicate corruption in all sectors in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 37:28).
