Malaysia’s Education Ministry (MOE) announced that it will soon issue guidelines for banning smartphone use among students below 16 years old in schools. The decision follows the government’s plan to improve safety in educational institutions, including increased police monitoring and efforts to protect children from cyber threats. The ministry also supports setting 16 as the minimum age for social media use, with the Communications Ministry tasked to study how to enforce it. MOE urged schools to work closely with Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and local communities to strengthen student safety. This comes after the tragic fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old student by a 14-year-old schoolmate in Petaling Jaya, which sparked national concern over youth safety and discipline.

Abba Father, we lift up the family and friends of the student who lost her life. Comfort them in their pain, and bring healing and peace to all who are grieving. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:18).

Lord, bless parents, teachers, and communities to work together for the good of every child. Let schools become safe places of learning, love, and growth. In Jesus’ name. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 133:1).
