Iranian human rights activist Reza Khandan has not been allowed to visit his wife, Nasrin Sotoudeh, a well-known human rights lawyer, for over nine months because she refuses to wear the mandatory hijab during prison visits.
Khandan, who is serving a 3½-year prison sentence for opposing Iran’s hijab law, began a sit-in protest on September 30.
Twelve political prisoners at Evin Prison said this punishment is a form of “white torture” and a violation of human rights.
Rights groups, including Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and PEN America, have petitioned the United Nations to demand his release, calling his detention unlawful and life-threatening.
Despite growing public defiance, Iran’s judiciary insists that hijab laws remain in force.
Abba Father, bring justice to those who are wrongly imprisoned and let truth prevail over oppression. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 103:6).
Lord, move the hearts of leaders to respect human rights and treat every person with dignity and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 1:17).
